Spatial Data at MIT

MIT Geodata Repository

The MIT Geodata Repository enables access to an international collection of GIS data through the MIT network. There are two easy ways to discover and access the data on the repository:
  1. GeoWeb: search, view, and download data and view metadata using a standard web browser (MIT web certificates required)
    GeoWeb help video

  2. MIT Geodata Search Tool for ArcGIS software: search for GIS data and metadata and load GIS files directly into ArcMap. We recommend this tool for anyone wanting to use the ArcGIS software package to create maps or use the many tools provided for doing spatial analysis. Learn more about the MIT Geodata repository, how to set up your personal account, and how to download and setup the MIT Geodata Search Tool in ArcGIS on your own machine or use it in the MIT GIS lab at: http://libraries.mit.edu/gis/data/repository/about.html. This version also includes the census mapping tool.
Both discovery methods provide location-based and text-based search options. Learn more about the MIT Geodata repository at: http://libraries.mit.edu/gis/data/repository/about.html.

Data in the MIT Libraries

The MIT libraries have:

  • books about GIS (Geographic Information Systems or Geographic Information Science), GPS (Global Positioning Systems), and Remote Sensing
  • data in the MIT Geodata Repository, on cd and dvd for GIS and remote sensing analysis
  • Manuals for GIS software
  • GPS units are available for checkout from Rotch Library so users can collect their own data
  • Electronic Journals and Databases with statistical data can be found using Vera
Many of the books, manuals, and data cd's can be found in the GIS Lab in Rotch Library, but it is best to search Barton, the libraries' online catalog, to check what is in the MIT libraries and where it is located.

Tips for Searching Barton, the MIT Libraries online catalog:

Basic Search:
A very general search could begin with searching by subject keyword = Geographic Information Systems. or subject begins with = Geographic Information Systems . An * can be used as a wildcard.

Advanced Search:
If you know you want to work with digital data it is helpful to limit your "search by physical format" to just cd-roms and dvdroms (electronic resources would include cd's and things like electronic journals as well). Limited physical format and other more detailed searches can be done in advanced options (click the "Advanced" link in the upper left corner of the main Barton page).

locations:
  • Rotch Library - houses the GIS lab and the US Census of Population and Housing
  • Lindgren Library - receives many science related cd's and government documents
  • Dewey Library - houses many government documents, including the US Economic Census, as well as a data/gis workstation
  • Additional information about Barton and how to search it effectively can be found in the Help and FAQ links towards the upper right hand corner of any Barton screen.

    US Census Data at MIT

Rotch Library houses the Census of Population and Housing. Dewey Library houses the Economic Census. Searches in Barton can be limited to the Census Collection when using the advanced search screen. Geolytics is a company that has helped make mapping US Census data easier by packaging the data on cd with their software. More information about Geolytics can be found on their website at http://www.geolytics.com. A listing of Geolytics cd's available in the MIT Libraries can be found in Barton by doing an Advanced Search by Publisher = Geolytics. The Geolytics software can be found installed on the Census workstation in the GIS lab in Rotch Library. Additional information about US Census information in the MIT Libraries can be found at: http://libraries.mit.edu/guides/types/census/.
