1. Save literature searches and have new results sent to you via email or RSS feeds.

The following databases have this capability, although you will need to register for these free services:

all engineering fields
Register and log in. Do a search. Click on "search history." Select "email alert" box to make your search into an email alert. You will receive a weekly update of the results of your search. You may save up to 125 alerts.
GeoRef
geosciences
Register and log in. Do a search. Click on "alert me." Customize your alert. Choose RSS feed or email. You will be emailed every time the database is updated.
Inspec
computer science, electrical engineering, physics
Register and log in. Do a search. Click on "search history." Select "email alert" box to make your search into an email alert. You will receive a weekly update of the results of your search. You may save up to 125 alerts.
PubMed
medicine, biosciences
Create a My NCBI account and log in. Do a search and click on "save search." You will be able to customize your alert.
Web of Science
all science fields
Click on "open a saved search" to go to registration page. Register and log in. Do a search and click on "search history." Click "save history." You will be able to customize your alert.

2. Get tables of contents of favorite journals sent to you via email or RSS feeds.

Most journals will list feeds on their home pages. The following publishers offer this service, although you will need to register for these free services:

Provider Instructions
Elsevier Register for service and log in. Click "submit." (You don't need to click on "optional information and alert settings.") Click on "search" button. Run a search and save it as a search alert. You can customize your alert.
IEEE Click on "alerts." Register and log in. Select which tables of contents you want to see. You may receive them as email, RSS feeds, or simply read them when you log in.
Nature Click on "e-alert sign up." Fill out information (all fields are required). Select what tables of contents you want to receive. To save a search (another Nature feature), do a search and click "save search." Searches last for 30 days, but you may re-run them within 7 days of expiration to extend them.
Science Click on "alerts." Click on "add/edit/delete alerts." Click on "register." Log in and click on "add/edit/delete alerts." Customize your alerts.
Springer Click on "alerts." Click on "register." Do a search and click on "save this list." Customize the alert. You can save as an RSS feed, as well.
Wiley Click "register now." Log in and do a search. Click "save search." Click "activate alert." You will receive an email when new content is available for a specific title or when new results are available.
