Faculty Profile: Dr. Gareth H. McKinley
The Project: Dr. Gareth McKinley’s
Non-Newtonian Fluid Research Group
in the Hatsopoulos Microfluids Laboratory of
the Department of Mechanical Engineering
The Challenge: Archive and distribute the lab’s
preprint series
The Solution: DSpace at MIT
Dr. Gareth H. McKinley, Professor of Mechanical Engineering at MIT,
chose DSpace as an archive for his preprints and for its potential
as a distribution mechanism for his research on fluid dynamics.
As at many of MIT’s labs and centers, Dr. Gareth McKinley
and his Non-Newtonian Fluid Research Group in the Hatsopoulos Microfluids
Laboratory produce preprints they would like to distribute to the
scientific community.
After reading about DSpace in TechTalk, McKinley realized he could
archive and distribute preprints without having to build and maintain
separate Web sites.
With a simple web-based interface, DSpace enables McKinley and
members of his lab to manage this growing collection. Acknowledging
that “faculty are very busy beasts” McKinley adds that
DSpace is a “relatively easy” solution to MIT faculty’s
digital archiving needs.

Dr. Gareth McKinley directs the Non-Newtonian
Fluid (NNF) Research Group in the Hatsopoulos Microfluids Laboratory
of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at MIT.
