Course Reserves
Student questions about course reserves | Faculty questions

1. How do I get to Dewey Library?
The Dewey Library is located on the first floor of Building E53, Room 100.

2. How long can I take out an item? Why can't I take it out for a longer period of time?
Current reserve items may be borrowed for two hours at a time; they may be renewed up to three times as long as no one else is waiting to use them. Reserve items from previous semesters can be taken out for longer.

3. What kinds of materials are on reserve and for how long can I borrow them?
The Dewey Library has books and other materials for courses on Reserve, as well as:

  • Journals (2 hour circulation)
  • CD-ROMs and diskettes (some room-use only, some 30 day circulation)
  • videos (2 hour circulation, in library only. Exceptions can be made for faculty members who wish to use videos in class).
The Library has two TV/VCR combos for the viewing of videos, as well as headphones for individual and group use.

4. How many reserve items can I check out at once?
Three Reserve items at a time.

5. Do reserve materials go out overnight?
If an item is checked out or renewed within two hours of the Library closing, it may be kept overnight. The item would need to be returned or renewed within one hour of the Library opening the following day. Please bear in mind that Dewey Library’s hours vary. (link to hours).

6. What happens if I return an item later than the date and time due?
There is a steep fine for overdue reserve materials, however, there is a 15 minute grace period for reserve materials.

7. Can reserve items be renewed? Can I renew them indefinitely?
Yes, up to three times as long as no one is waiting to use them. After the third renewal, items may be brought to the Library and renewed again, provided no one else needs them.

8. Can I "reserve" a reserve item?
Reserve items cannot be held for you; they are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

9. Can reserve items be returned at any library circulation desk, like regular 4-week items?
Reserve items must be returned to the library they were borrowed from; items returned to other libraries can take up to two days to get back to their proper location, and during that time, they are unavailable for others to borrow.

10. Do you have copies of course readers for all of the courses? Why not?
No; we only keep copies of course readers if professors give them to us.

11. How do I locate Reserve materials for my class? How do I request Reserve books?
There are binders with Reserve lists for each course at the Information desk. To find items for your class, look up your course number in the appropriate binder, and then provide a staff member with the call numbers for the items you need.

12. How long do books stay on Reserve after the semester ends?
Books remain on Reserve for one year; i.e., books on Reserve for Spring 2001 courses will remain on Reserve until Spring 2002, because they often are used again within the year. However, Reserve books that are not currently being used for courses can be checked out for 30 days.
