questions about course reserves |
Student
questions
1. Does the library have a record of the books I placed on reserve during a previous semester?
Yes, if your reserves request was made over the past couple of semesters, then it has been posted online. To see if your course is included in this list, go to the online course list and follow the instructions to update your request for the coming semester.
2.
What if it's my first time requesting books to be placed on reserve at
Barker?
You
have several options - pick the one that works best for you. Keep
in mind that it will take a few days to process your request
and at least 10 days if a book you request for your course is
checked out and needs to be recalled. If the library does not own
the book and it must be purchased, this process may take several
weeks.
Option
1: Save time typing and copying/pasting by compiling
a list of the books that you want to be on reserve using Your
Bookshelf in the Barton catalog (directions
on how to do this), and
email the list to barker-res@mit.edu.
Option
2: Complete the Barker Library
Reserves Form (MSWord) and
email it to barker-res@mit.edu or
print it out and send it to Reserves
Processing, Barker Engineering Library, 10-500.
Option
3: If
you have already created list of the books that you want to be
on reserve, you can email it directly to barker-res@mit.edu.
If you choose to use this option, please be sure to include the
following information:
- book
title, author(s), year of publication, ISBN
and call# (if owned by MIT)
- course
name and number
- number
of students expected to take the course
- instructor's
name and email address
- department
that is offering the course
- name
and email address of any TA or assistant who is helping
with the course
3.
May I place my own copy of a book on reserve?
Yes,
we'll be glad to place personal copies on reserve. Bring your
copy to the Barker circulation desk, along with the course information.
In order to facilitate the return of the book to you after the
semester, be sure to write your name and contact information
in the book.
4.
May I send you copies of articles I want on reserve?
Yes,
you may send us copies, but please be sure to print and send
a completed Barker Library Reserves
Form (MSWord) along
with the copies, including your name and phone number and the
course number that the articles are for. And if you are submitting
several articles for a course, please put them in a binder.
5.
I want to put a book on reserve but the Libraries don't own
it. How do I go about doing this?
We
can order the book for you. Simply fill out the Barker
Library Reserves Form (MSWord) and email it to barker-res@mit.edu, making sure to include the
ISBN and as much information about the books and the class as
you can. Once we have all of this information, we'll order the
book for our collection. Please remember that it can take up
to 6 weeks for new book orders to arrive.
6.
I submitted a list of books to be placed on reserve, but
my students tell me a book is not on reserve at Barker. What
can I do about this?
Contact
the Barker Reserves Processing Team (barker-res@mit.edu)
and we will do our best to rectify the situation.
7.
Who should I talk to if I have reserves questions?
If you
have any questions about reserves, please contact the Barker Reserves
Processing Team (barker-res@mit.edu,
617.253-2283).
