Biography

Norman C. Rasmussen (1927-2003) earned a PhD in physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1956. He was an instructor in the physics department from 1956 to 1958. In July 1958 he was appointed assistant professor of nuclear engineering at MIT, associate professor in 1961, and in 1965, professor (1965-1994). He directed the MIT summer session for professional program in nuclear power reactor safety beginning in 1969, and was named head of the Department of Nuclear Engineering July 1, 1975, serving in that position until 1981.
In 1974 Rasmussen directed a study prepared for the US Atomic Energy Commission (later the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission) on the public risk from nuclear power plant accidents. The report was released in 1975 as Reactor safety study: an assessment of accident risks in U.S. commercial nuclear power plants: main report. The study is also known as WASH 1400. In addition to serving as a consultant to the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Dr. Rasmussen consulted with private companies.
