- The collection contains volumes of Thomas Gaffield's research notes, correspondence, and published information gathered by him into scrapbooks, primarily on the topic of glass. Material is bound into volumes titled: Notes on Glass, 1862-1875, volumes 1-5; Glass Journal, 1858-1881, volumes 1-4; Experiments in Photography, 1863-1894, volumes 1-2. There are also copies of letters written by Gaffield, 1868-1892. There is an index in the front of the volume. Notes on Glass, Glass Journal, and Experiments in Photography chronicle Gaffield's experiments and observations on American and European glassmaking and photography. This material created by Thomas Gaffield is part of a library of over 200 volumes of related books he collected that are held by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Institute Archives and Special Collections.

Biography
Thomas Gaffield, 1825-1900, was a glass manufacturer. He was a partner in the firm of Tuttle, Gaffield and Company from 1847 to 1869 and helped form the Boston Crystal Glass Works in 1861. Mr. Gaffield became a member of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Corporation beginning in March 1896, serving until his death in 1900. Prior to this he was an active member of the MIT Society of Arts and lectured to students in Chemistry on the topic of glass manufacture.

Source of Acquisiton
The papers were given to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) by Thomas Gaffield and his wife beginning in 1895 with the gift of a collecton of his books on glass manufacture. In 1905 volumes were formally accessioned into the MIT Libraries' catalog. In 1982 manuscript volumes and scrapbooks created by Thomas Gaffield were separately described as manuscript collection MC 139.
Location of Copies
Two reels of microfilm: Reel 1 contains a copy of Notes on Glass, volumes 1-5; and Reel 2 contains a copy of Glass Journal, volumes 1-4. Also filmed with this collection is an index to Notes on Glass and Glass Journal, prepared by Judith Johnson of the Corning Museum of Glass.
