Historical note
The Department of Mining Engineering and Metallurgy began in 1865 as the Department of Geology and Mining. In 1889, after a series of name changes and curriuculum changes, the study of metallurgy was formally absorbed and the department became the Department of Mining Engineering and Metallurgy. As time passed, the name changed again several times and two distinct departments emerged: Geology and Metallurgy. The most recent change came in 1975 when the Department of Metallurgy and Materials Science became the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (Course III).
Scope and Contents of the Collection
The collection contains volumes of laboratory instructions including diagrams, data sheets, and tabulated results of student laboratory experiments conducted at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology during the period 1899 to 1926.
The instructing staff of the Department of Mining and Metallurgy teaching the classes represented in this collection include Edward E. Bugbee (at MIT 1907-1937) and Rufus C. Reed (at MIT 1907-1944). Eight volumes of reports for their classes include results for Potassium Cyanide Percolation and Agitation Test, Barrel Chlorination Test, Plattner Chlorination Test, and Chloridizing Roast and Hyposulphite Lixiviation Test. Reports for Professor Hayward (at MIT 1906-1946) include experiments with Roasting Pyrite, Cupelling Lead and Desilverization of Base Bullion, Blast Furnace Smelt, Washoe Pan Amalgamation and Electro-Deposition of Copper. Laboratory reports for Professor Charles E. Locke (at MIT 1901-1937) include experiments on Concentration of a Lead Ore and Work with Magnets; Milling of a Gold Ore; Crushing Tests; Glass Table Run; Oil Flotation; Embrey Vanner Run on Canvas Table Concentrates; Crushing, Sizing and Hand Picking Tests. There is also a set of student laboratory tests for Professor Richard W. Lodge (at MIT 1889-1907).
