Historical note
The foundation of what has been named since 1975 the MIT Women's League (formerly Technology Matrons) had its beginning in a group of wives of faculty and administrators of the Institute who met socially and informally. In 1913 the MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) Technology Matrons formally adopted a constitution and bylaws and from there the organization developed. Interest groups, groups which undertook particular services, were formed in 1930 by Margaret Compton, when she became part of the MIT community as the wife of the new MIT president, Karl Compton.
In 1922 the Technology Dames (name changed in 1972 to Technology Community Wives), an organization for student wives, began as a subgroup of Technology Matrons which was initially limited to the wives of faculty members and administrators of the Institute. In 1951 membership was expanded to include female staff, and in 1956 wives of members of the Lincoln Laboratory were invited to membership.
A fuller history can be found in the 1995 publication "The MIT Women's League: A Rich Heritage" authored by the Women's League History Committee.
Scope and Contents of the Collection
Records of the MIT Women's League, previously known as the MIT Technology Matrons, cover the period 1913-2004. The collection includes annual reports and bylaws, minutes and agendas of annual meetings, minutes of the League Executive Committee and notebooks of committee chairs, records of the treasurer and other financial and budget information, committee reports including that of the Long-Range Planning Committee, minutes and membership lists of the Survey Committee, bulletins and newsletters, a cookbook, and photographs of the Technology Dames. Interest groups, social activities, and service projects undertaken by the League are well documented. Especially useful is a history of the League researched and compiled by the League's History Committee and issued in 1995.
