ADMINISTRATIVE HISTORY

In 1961 the Joint Center for Urban Studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University arranged to provide technical and research assistance to the government of Venezuela to develop the Guayana region, an area near the confluence of the Orinoco and Caroni rivers that possessed great natural resources. The Joint Center helped determine the requirements for housing, industry, and public services in the city, expected to reach a population of 200,000, as well as for the region as a whole. At MIT the work was centered in the Department of City and Regional Planning (later the Department of Urban Studies and Planning). The project, under the direction of Visiting Professor Norman William, Jr., also involved MIT Professors Donald S. Appleyard, John Friedman, and Lloyd Rodwin.
