Historical note
In the early years of the Institute, the governing board consisted of the president, treasurer, secretary, and four Corporation members who, as officers of the Institute, bore the title of vice president. In 1870, MIT president John D. Runkle simplified MIT’s corporate organization to a president, a treasurer, and a secretary.(1)
The office of senior vice president was re-introduced in 1932, when Vannevar Bush was appointed vice president, serving in that position from 1932 to 1939. James R. Killian (acting president 1943-1946) and Julius A. Stratton (appointed vice president and provost in 1952) had similar responsibilities.
With the growth of MIT in the post-World War II period, and after the appointment of James Killian as president in 1948, MIT’s central administration became more complex and less centralized, and a number of vice presidencies were created to oversee various aspects of academics and administration. In 1970, President Howard Johnson appointed his assistant Constantine Simonides vice president and assistant to the president, and in July 1971 Simonides was appointed vice president in the office of the president. At that time the administrative organization of MIT also included a vice president, organization services; vice president, operations; vice president, academic administration; vice president and secretary; vice president and treasurer; and vice president for research. Constantine Simonides served as the senior vice president until his death in April 1994. While serving in that position, Simonides concurrently served as secretary of the MIT Corporation, a position he was elected to in 1985.(2)
As vice president, Constantine Simonides assisted the president and chancellor with institutional organization and planning, oversaw studies of academic programs and operations, and was responsible for Institute Information Services (now Public Relations Services), the MIT Press.(3) and the Medical Department.(4) Simonides was deeply involved with the governing bodies of the Institute; he was responsible for “coordination, agenda development, and supervision of staff support for the Institute’s academic councils and committees, and the senior executive group.”(5) He served on the Academic Council, the Administrative Council, the Committee on Educational Policy (later known as the Faculty Policy Committee), and the Faculty Council, as well as serving as secretary of the Executive Committee of the Corporation. Simonides also attended meetings of department heads, faculty meetings, and meetings of the Information Group. In 1980, with the retirement of John Wynne, vice president for administration and personnel, Simonides took on added responsibilities. These included senior responsibility for human resources and oversight of admissions, career planning and placement, student financial aid, student affairs, and athletics.(6)
After Simonides’ death, his areas of responsibility were split up among various members of the administration. Personnel matters became the responsibility of Joan F. Rice, formerly director of personnel, who was named vice president of human resources. Kathryn Willmore, executive assistant to the president, succeeded Simonides as secretary of the Corporation. James J. Culliton, vice president for financial operations, was named vice president for administration. In his new role, Culliton was responsible for heading the Office of Admissions, Career Services and Preprofessional Advising, the Department of Athletics, and the Medical Department.(7)
In 1998 President Charles M. Vest created the Office of Executive Vice President to be responsible for the overall leadership, management, and organization of the Institute's administrative and financial affairs. The executive vice president serves on the Academic Council, the Administrative Systems and Policies Coordinating Council, the Budget and Finance Steering Group, the Building Committee, the Committee for Review of Space Planning, the Communication and Coordination and Planning Group, and the Town and Gown Committee, and participates in meetings of the Auditing, Executive, and Investment Committees of the MIT Corporation.(8) John R. Curry served as executive vice president from 1998 to 2005.
Constantine B. Simonides was born in Athens, Greece. He attended high school in the city until age seventeen, at which time he came to the United States as an exchange student to attend St. Andrew’s School in Delaware. He entered MIT as a freshman in 1952, and later transferred to Boston University, where in 1958 he received a bachelor of arts degree in economics. In 1960, he received a master’s degree from Harvard University in business administration. Later that year, Simonides began a life-long career at MIT. He was first appointed assistant to the director of the summer session, and in 1962 became assistant director of International Programs at the Sloan School of Management. In 1964 he was appointed assistant to the dean of the Sloan School, and in 1966 was appointed assistant to MIT President Howard Wesley Johnson. In 1971, President Johnson appointed Simonides vice president, and in 1985, Simonides was elected secretary and ex officio member of the MIT Corporation. He served as vice president of the Institute and secretary of the Corporation until his death in 1994.(9)

Scope and Contents of the Collection
Beginning Work at MIT
Constantine B. Simonides began at MIT as the assistant director of the summer session, a post he held from 1960 to 1962. During that time, he acted as the assistant to the director of admissions; a small set of records documents his 1961 and 1962 recruitment visits to high schools in Florida and Georgia (box 58).
When MIT celebrated its centennial in 1961, Simonides was appointed centennial executive assistant. As such, he assisted with the coordination of the centennial convocations and of the International Conference on Scientific and Engineering Education. The centennial celebrations are documented largely in AC 174 (Centennial Week. Records, 1949-1961), but Simonides’ chronological correspondence files from 1961 (box 46) contain many references to his work on this event.
Sloan School of Management
From 1962 to 1966, Simonides held a series of posts at MIT’s Sloan School of Management. He was assistant director of International Programs from 1962 to 1964, then assistant to Howard W. Johnson, dean of the Sloan School, and finally assistant dean of the Sloan School until 1966. During this time, he was heavily involved with the administration of the Fellows in Africa and the Fellows in Latin America programs, both of which sent business professionals to act as governmental advisors in newly-independent nations. These two programs are well documented through administrative materials and correspondence with the fellows (box 30). Simonides’ years at Sloan are documented in a more general way by his chronological correspondence files (Series III) and by a small set of files marked “Sloan School of Management Archives” (box 21).
Assistant to the President
In 1966, Howard W. Johnson was elected president of MIT. Simonides served on the Operating Group of the Inaugural Committee; the bulk of the inauguration records have been separated from AC 276 and moved to AC 36 (Records of the Inaugural Committee, 1900-1980), Series II, but some documentation of Simonides’ work on the inauguration can be found in the correspondence files from that year (box 47). Johnson appointed Simonides assistant to the president, a post Simonides held until 1970. The records of this period include working files for Howard Johnson’s speeches, which contain annotated drafts and correspondence (boxes 18-19).
The records from this period also reflect the MIT community’s response to the Vietnam War and to MIT’s relationship to the federal government, especially to the Department of Defense and the armed forces. As Johnson’s assistant, Simonides was a member of a group of faculty and administrators who worked to monitor and defuse potentially volatile political situations on campus during the late 1960s and early 1970s ; these efforts are documented through extensive clipping files (box 25, 27), photographs (Series VI, boxes 62-63), correspondence (boxes 29-30), and reports of eyewitnesses to campus events (box 29).
Vice President
In 1970, President Howard Johnson appointed his assistant Constantine Simonides as vice president and assistant to the president, and in July 1971 Simonides was appointed vice president in the office of the president. He remained vice president until his death in 1994, and after Johnson he worked with three MIT presidents: Jerome B. Wiesner (1971-1980), Paul E. Gray (1980-1990), and Charles M. Vest (1990-2004). The bulk of the collection documents Simonides’ years as vice president (1970-1994). His involvement with Institute governance is reflected in copious annotated committee minutes and notes (Series I, boxes 1-11).
1970-1980
Simonides’ first decade as vice president was marked by student and faculty protests, a slowing in the development of research programs, and funding cuts throughout the Institute. Changes in research funding and academics are well documented by the committee files in Series I. Protests and campus activism are documented in correspondence and clipping files in Series II (Subject files) under the headings Activism, Campus unrest, and Disruption; Series VI (Photographs) also documents some of the protests held on campus. The early 1970s also saw the culmination of the work done by the faculty-led Commission on MIT Education, which undertook a comprehensive review of MIT’s undergraduate curriculum (boxes 28, 60).
In addition to the political issues of the 1960s and 1970s, the social issues of the time are documented in Simonides’ records. MIT’s increased involvement with community affairs projects, especially those related to minority education and inner-city housing, is reflected in a large set of funding proposals and fund raising requests (boxes 9-13, restricted). Feminism and women’s issues are documented in correspondence and in the minutes of working groups (boxes 29, 45-46), as well as in the records of the MIT/Wellesley cross-registration program (box 45). Minority issues and affirmative action are documented through correspondence, hiring records, and clipping files.
1980-1994
During the 1980s, MIT conducted studies of its admissions and financial aid practices (boxes 51, 42), debated the issue of tenure for non-academic instructors (boxes 8, 52), and revised its policies on health care coverage (box 56) and on the governance of the Medical Department (boxes 54-55). The Lab for Computer Science launched Project Athena (boxes 14, 28) to explore the uses of computers in academic life, and administrative offices examined potential uses for office automation (box 40). A wide cross-section of MIT was involved with Project Daedalus, an exploration of human-powered flight; Simonides, a native speaker of Greek, took part in Athens-based public relations for the Daedalus’ 1988 flight from Crete to Santorini (box 28). Around this time, the administration was also considering its response to the struggle against apartheid in South Africa (boxes 41-42). Series II (Subject files) documents MIT’s activities during the 1980s through correspondence, minutes, reports, and photographs.
For the last years of his vice presidency, Simonides defended MIT’s policy on student financial aid. Along with the rest of the MIT administration, he was occupied with the United States government’s legal action against MIT and other private colleges and universities whose financial aid practices the government believed to be in violation of the Sherman Antitrust Act (boxes 32-39, 61). MIT continued to pursue the case after the other colleges and universities dropped out; the case went to trial in 1992. The United States District Court ruled against MIT, but MIT appealed, and in 1993, the United States Department of Justice agreed to drop the case. Series V, Subseries A (Legal files, U.S. v. Brown et al.) contains the records of the case.
Other items of note in the collection include a small set of photographs of the Blizzard of 1978 (box 28), one box of Simonides’ personal correspondence (Series III., box 36), a set of completed surveys sent by outside institutions (boxes 58-60), and a group of files documenting MIT’s development of or amendments to official Institute policies (box 40).
