Archives Collections: Institute Records

Overview | Using Institute records | List of Collections

For faculty papers, see manuscript collections

Brief summary descriptions of many collections are included in the Research Libraries Information Network (RLIN) database. At present, collection descriptions are not in Barton, the MIT Libraries catalog.

Finding aids for many of the Institute records collections, which provide detailed descriptions of individual collections, are located in the Archives reading room. Although most of these finding aids are not yet available electronically, copies can be purchased and sent to researchers in advance of a visit. Finding aids for several collections of Institute records are available online through a project with the American Institute of Physics. The list of collections includes links to additional information. The collections are in various stages of organization and many are ready for use. However, some collections, due to work under way, are not yet available for research use.

Access to Institute records is governed by the Institute Records Access Policy. In numerous cases, restrictions on use, copying, or copyright apply. Patrons are urged to discuss such issues in advance of requesting materials.

The research materials in the Institute Archives are complemented by the holdings in the MIT Museum (617.253.4440).
