In 1884 Arthur D. Little left MIT to work for the Richmond Paper Co. at Rumford, R.I., where he met Roger B. Griffin. Little proposed that the two men start their own business for chemical analysis and consultation. Griffin expressed his interest in a letter dated August 12, 1886, and the company that would become Arthur D. Little, Inc. was born.
