The year 2011 marks the anniversary of the granting of the Institute’s charter on April 10, 1861, by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Planning is under way to celebrate this momentous milestone with events, books, oral histories, and a Global Service Challenge.
As the repository of much of the documentation of MIT's history, the Institute Archives & Special Collections will focus on the production of a comprehensive timeline, which will be available online to the MIT community and the world. Drawing on its own collections, and in collaboration with the MIT Museum, AMPS and the Libraries, the timeline will chronicle the extraordinary history of MIT and celebrate the accomplishments of the people who have made that history.
