July 2004 - August 2009

In
June 2004 we redesigned the top-level
home page of this site.
We
followed a user-centered
design process to create the architecture. Our Web Advisory
Group led the project.
New features
included:
- How
do I?....
- Tip of the Week/Hot Topic/Featured Service/Featured Resource (changes
weekly)
- Barton catalog quick search
- Revised "quick links"
- Photo
stripe ("Curious?" link)
It also
included important improvements to the code:
- Used standards-compliant
code (XHTML transitional).
- Included more features for accessibility, such as "access keys" for
skipping to major content.
The changes
were based on results of usability testing and feedback from our users.
The new home page gave more flexibility for special announcements
and helped new users get started, with features such as "how do
I find an article?"
The graphic design was by Hecht
Design in consultation with the MIT Libraries' Web Advisory
Group. Photography was by Liang-Wu
Cai and Barry Hetherington.
June 2001 - June 2004

This
was the 3rd-generation web site of the MIT Libraries. It was developed
during the year 2000, and released in 2001.

In 1994
and earlier the MIT Libraries had a "gopher" site, called
MITosis. The gopher server is no longer running, but here is an HTML
rendition of what was on the menu.
