Released April 4, 2008; deadline was April 14, 2008.
Congratulations to the winner of the drawing, Jenn Young!

The first step in this puzzle is to solve the word search (only the words in all capital letters are in the grid). Once solved, the grid looks like this, where red letters were used in one of the listed words, and black letters were not used:

Reading the unused letters across the rows gives the following words:

Inventions
Of Note

Wires Rag
Two One
Malone
Take Me With You
My Love

The Bell Rang
Race
Bobbin and Down
The Telegraph
My Automobile
Home
The Subway

The first two lines are used to clue the Inventions Of Note sheet music collection, an online collection of popular songs and piano compositions that portray technologies as revealed through song texts and/or cover art. The collection was established by MIT's Lewis Music Library in 1997, and is still maintained by the library. All of the names used in the word bank for the word search are composers of pieces from this collection.

The key point to notice is that each of the other phrases that came out of the puzzle is the title of a song in the Inventions of Note collection with one word missing. The corresponding titles and missing words are:

Phrase From Grid Song Title from index Missing Word
Wires Rag Live Wires Rag Live
Two One Two in One In
Malone Nora Malone Nora
Take Me With You Take Me Up With You Up
My Love My Skylark Love Skylark
The Bell Rang The Phone Bell Rang Phone
Race Auto Race Auto
Bobbin and Down Bobbin' Up and Down Up
The Telegraph The Lover's Telegraph Lover's
My Automobile In My Automobile In
Home New Home New
The Subway The Subway Glide Glide

Reading the first letter of each missing word, in order, you find the answer, Linus Pauling.
