MIT Libraries Puzzle Challenge
Released April 4, 2008; deadline was April 14, 2008. The first step in this puzzle is to solve the word search (only the words in all capital letters are in the grid). Once solved, the grid looks like this, where red letters were used in one of the listed words, and black letters were not used:
Reading the unused letters across the rows gives the following words: Inventions Wires Rag The Bell Rang The first two lines are used to clue the Inventions Of Note sheet music collection, an online collection of popular songs and piano compositions that portray technologies as revealed through song texts and/or cover art. The collection was established by MIT's Lewis Music Library in 1997, and is still maintained by the library. All of the names used in the word bank for the word search are composers of pieces from this collection. The key point to notice is that each of the other phrases that came out of the puzzle is the title of a song in the Inventions of Note collection with one word missing. The corresponding titles and missing words are:
