MIT Libraries Puzzle Challenge
Released October 31, 2008; deadline was November 12, 2008. The first thing to do is the obvious: decode the message. Correctly decoded, it reads as follows:
Decoding this block of text, however, is only the first half of the puzzle. The next step is to follow the instructions and go to Barton and request that paper. The Library Storage Annex would receive the request, but instead of scanning the paper, would forward along the second part of the puzzle. The second part of the puzzle first asks for three words which are clued in from the first part. Those words are SLY CODING ZEBRA, and can be found by looking at the code used in the decryption:
Next, you need to change a letter and descramble each to obtain three shades of blue. This just take a little bit of figuring:
Next, we need to fit these letters into the grid as specified, and find four shades of green. The completed grid, with the shades of green highlighted, is below:
And so, removing the shades of green, the words that we can take out of that are BUSY REDEFINING SPECTRA. And again we just need a little figuring to change a letter and descramble each word to get a shade of red:
Finally, taking the appropriate letters from those words, we get the answer, INFANTRY. webmaster@libraries.mit.edu |
