See the unsolved puzzle here.
Or go back to the Puzzle Archive.

Released October 15, 2007; deadline was October 30, 2007. Congratulations to the winner of the drawing, Mergen Nachin!

The astute library-user may recognize the first column as ISSN numbers (unique numbers given to published journals); others may search Google to find this fact. Since the second column of numbers is rather meaningless at this point, the only thing to do is find out which journals the ISSN numbers correspond to. They are:

1541-0161 - Sound and Vibration
0013-4252 - Electrical Communication
0356-7133 - Aqua Fennica
0033-7579 - Radiation Effects
0097-8493 - Computers & Graphics
0374-3306 - Hasler Review
1573-4137 - Current Nanoscience
0030-3909 - Optica Acta
1365-7828 - Lighting Research and Technology
0304-3991 - Ultramicroscopy
0892-7022 - Molecular Simulation
1093-8001 - Network Magazine
0040-4403 - Texas Journal of Science
0043-7662 - Wood & Wood Products
1055-3614 - Object Magazine
0019-5596 - Indian Journal of Pure and Applied Physics
0140-4067 - Nuclear Energy
1073-1180 - Cell Vision
1463-5003 - Ocean Modelling
0167-9317 - Microelectronic Engineering
0556-2821 - Physical Review D
0723-4864 - Experiments in Fluids
1527-6988 - Natural Hazards Review
0737-3937 - Drying Technology
0167-9287 - Education & Computing
0049-8246 - X-Ray Spectrometry

Reading the first letter of each of these journal titles, in order, spells out "Search column two in Compendex." Compendex is an Engineering Village database which provides abstracts and full bibliographic citations for journal articles, conferences and reports in all engineering fields dating back to 1884. It covers worldwide engineering and technical literature as well as related fields in science and management. You can access Compendex through Vera, the MIT Libraries' listing of databases and e-journals. For more information about Compendex, see our video tutorial, Introduction to Compendex and Inspec. A quick search in Compendex shows that the numbers in column two are Compendex accession numbers, each of which corresponds with a journal article published in one of the journals listed in column one. The articles are as follows:

Accession Number Article title begins with First author Journal

02246978295

04538755321 Entrainment... Ezer Ocean Modelling

Reading down the first letter of the article title, we see that it says "Sort first author by column one." So we put the journals in the same order as they are in column one:

Accession Number Article title begins with First author Journal
19680031790 Community noise... Thiessen Sound and Vibration
86080115365 High resolution... Hampel Electrical Communication
93071634059 Limnological research... Eloranta Aqua Fennica

88120169510 Use of CAE Schneider Hasler Review
072310639011 Microwave-assisted synthesis... Wang Current Nanoscience
86100154359 Bilayer holograms... Evitkhiev Optica Acta

83040050581 On the spatial resolution... Imeson Ultramicroscopy
05028775138 Rational, hierarchical... Snyder Molecular Simulation
04308276552 Trusted computing... Dornan Network Magazine

86090137790 Increasing productivity... Incardone Wood & Wood Products
97033562781 Object technology... Taylor Object Magazine
90080187981 Ultrasonic behaviour... Ramanjappa Indian Journal of Pure and Applied Physics
97043590157 Regulatory view... Inkester Nuclear Energy
95102904626 Recent developments... Meredith Cell Vision
04538755321 Entrainment... Ezer Ocean Modelling
071010476684 Yield equation formulas Nadarajah Microelectronic Engineering

90110950560 Training computer-supported Eriksson Education & Computing
97073762336 Application of a microstrip... Veloso X-Ray Spectrometry

And now, reading down the first letter of the first author, we see "The answer is Dmitri Mendeleev."
