MIT Libraries Introduce Self-Service Book Check-Out

In response to requests from many library users, the MIT Libraries are initiating a self-service system for library borrowing. As a first step, the 3M™ SelfCheck™ System has been installed across from the Hayden circulation desk, which serves the Science and the Humanities Libraries. Instructions for use are on the machine.

Georgiana McReynolds, Access Services Librarian, who is in charge of implementing this new system, said, "SelfCheck will enable library borrowers to conduct simple check-out transactions much more quickly. Sometimes there is a line at the Circulation Desk, and this self-service system will make things easier for the borrower. Library staff can then spend time on more involved transactions."

Michael Finigan, Chair of the MIT Libraries Circulation Committee and Supervisor of Circulation Services at Barker Engineering Library, said: "Users have been asking us for this service for years. This is the first step and a pilot project. If it proves successful, the next step will be to extend this system to other library locations."

The Hayden Circulation Desk was chosen as the first site for this new service because it has the highest activity volume in the library system. Those who try out the system are encouraged to direct their comments to Georgiana McReynolds, x8-8022 gmac@mit.edu.
