MIT Libraries offer over 35 classes during IAP 2005Contact:
Heather Denny January 5, 2005 During IAP the MIT Libraries will sponsor 35 sessions that offer everything from expert advice on negotiating patents to exploring the global origins of hip hop music! Included in the diverse selection are an introduction to photography series, document scanning basics and creative bookbinding. Several of the classes will be repeated at different times to accommodate individual schedules. Back by popular demand are four favorite "Intellectual Property" sessions. "Patent Searching Fundamentals," "The Patent Process," "Copyright Issues for Using Information" and "Managing Your Copyright" will feature tips from a patent attorney, the MIT Technology Licensing Office, and MIT librarians on locating, licensing, and negotiating patents. The Libraries' Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and MIT Information Services and Technology (IS&T) will offer seven GIS classes on working with maps and data. Classes range from introductory to advanced use of ArcGIS and PCI Geomatica software. Many one-hour research help sessions also will be offered in specialized subject areas, including biomedical and environmental research, chemistry information sources, company research, education, materials science and engineering, nuclear science and engineering, psychology, social science data and many science and engineering online sources of information. New classes this year include "From Archimedes to Stephen Hawking: Resources in the History of Physics, " " Introduction to Metadata," "Finding MIT Theses in DSpace," and "Avoiding Plagiarism Pitfalls or Whose Line Is It, Anyway?" which is cosponsored with the Writing and Communication Center.
