Dedication of New and Renovated Library Areas
9 October 2002, 4-6:30pm

The MIT Community is invited to an Open House and Dedication of the new and renovated spaces in the Hayden Libraries, Building 14, on October 9, 2002 from 4:00 to 6:30pm. A short program will be held at 4:45pm. The theme for the day is: "MIT Libraries-Building Excellence for the 21st Century".

Over the summer during the construction period, the main entrance to the Hayden Libraries was temporarily relocated as a number of library spaces in Building 14 were created or renovated. The main entrance at 14S-100 has now been re-opened.

A 24-hour Study Room is now located at the entrance to the Hayden Libraries. This area features traditional library seating as well as comfortable chairs, computer workstations and a printer, wireless network connectivity, a photocopier, and two group study rooms. Just inside the newly renovated entrance is an integrated service desk that will streamline service to the more than 1000 individuals who utilize the Hayden Libraries on any given day. The desk combines book borrowing and return, interlibrary borrowing, and course reserves for both the Science and Humanities Libraries. The Science Library Reference Desk is located at the far end of the service desk. New public computer clusters for the Science Library are adjacent to the service desk.

The newly built E. Martin (1944) and Ethel Wunsch Conservation Laboratory will enable the MIT Libraries to better manage repairs to the hard-working circulating collections of the Libraries, while adding an important new function-rare book conservation. Now new equipment and facilities will help sustain highly sophisticated conservation treatments of the Libraries' older, rare, and unique collections, allowing these highly fragile materials once again to be used by students and faculty.

The Institute Archives and Special Collections area was renovated to provide a more pleasant working environment for readers, better security for the materials, and sufficient workspace for staff. Another renovated area is that of the MIT Libraries Systems and Technology Services, which maintains the hundreds of public and staff workstations in the library units across the campus and assists Libraries' staff in making collections and services available on the campus network.

Ann Wolpert, Director of Libraries, said: "These wonderful facilities are the result of more than two years of planning and implementation. We hope students and faculty will be pleased with the results and join us in thanking all those who made these improvements possible. With their broad range of services and resources, these spaces represent an important, continuing step for the MIT Libraries in the commitment to furthering the Institute's mission of excellence in education and research."

The event will include tours of all new areas, and refreshments.
