Technical Assistant, Scanning and Document Delivery

(Library Assistant II)

The MIT Libraries is seeking a production- and service-oriented individual to contribute to the work of the Libraries' Document Services Department. This position provides the opportunity for using and developing technical and library skill sets related to imaging services, document delivery, and digital libraries and is an excellent opportunity to gain experience in a dynamic academic library setting.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Under the direction of the Digital Imaging Supervisor, the Technical Assistant participates in all aspects of scanning and document delivery projects. S/he prepares documents for scanning, converts documents to PDF or other output formats, utilizes OCR and image processing applications, ensures quality control, and tracks projects as needed. Document preparation may also include metadata searching in the library catalog, DSpace repository, or other online sources. The Technical Assistant works with his/her supervisor and other staff members in meeting customer deadlines and production goals, and in maintaining quality standards for all scanning and document delivery activities. S/he follows established procedures to scan MIT Theses and Dissertations for distribution in MIT’s DSpace repository and to fulfill document delivery requests. The Technical Assistant also transmits documents to library patrons and outside users through document delivery software such as Ariel, Bscan-ILL, ILLiad or Prospero, as well as mail.

QUALIFICATIONS : Required: Minimum 6 months direct/related experience that provides some understanding of scanning or library functions; post-high school education can count toward experience. Technical experience with digital scanning equipment and related Windows-based software applications such as Adobe Acrobat Professional, Adobe Photoshop and Microsoft Excel. Demonstrated affinity for and adeptness in learning, understanding and effectively using technology. Evidence of strong organizational, time management and problem solving skills; ability to meet deadlines and manage competing priorities. Demonstrated aptitude for accurate and detail oriented work and good data entry skills. Positive customer service attitude with strong communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work independently as well as part of a team. Candidates are expected to articulate a genuine interest and enthusiasm for the position. Physical stamina to move and shelve books and other library material required. Desired: Experience with digital imaging or interlibrary loan.

HOURS: 35 hours per week, Monday-Friday, between 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Some flexibility in scheduling is possible.
