VPN (Virtual Private Network):

An Alternative Off-Campus Access Option

VPN is software supported by MIT IS&T that makes your computer appear to have an on-campus IP address.

Using VPN when off-campus can:

  • get you access to library resources that are only available from on-campus.
  • get you access when you are having problems with web certificates, settings in your browser, etc.
  • in many cases allow you to go directly to publisher's websites to get content rather than having to search Vera; since you will have an MIT IP address when using VPN, many publishers will recognize you as an authorized MIT user.

Please note there are a few resources where using VPN or having an MIT IP address is not enough - these are usually indicated in the Vera records for the items. The IEEE publications are some notable exceptions.

Please Ask Us! if you have problems getting access.
