VPN (Virtual Private Network):

An Alternative Off-Campus Access Option

VPN is browser-based client software supported by MIT IS&T that makes your computer appear to have an on-campus IP address.

Using VPN when off-campus can:

  • get you access to library resources that are only available from on-campus.
  • get you access when you are having problems with web certificates, settings in your browser, etc.
  • in many cases allow you to go directly to publisher's websites to get content rather than having to search Vera; since you will have an MIT IP address when using VPN, many publishers will recognize you as an authorized MIT user.

Please Ask Us! if you have problems getting access.

Additional authentication is sometimes required with VPN...

Please note there are a few resources where using VPN or having an MIT IP address is not enough - you must use MIT certificates or your Kerberos login to get access. Using Vera or Barton or our shortcut "get" URLs will always make sure this authentication gets invoked (bookmarks and Googling will usually NOT work).

These exceptions are usually noted in Vera, but below are some notable resources that have this exception:

ACS: http://libraries.mit.edu/get/acsjournals

APS Journals: http://libraries.mit.edu/get/aps

IEEE and IET: http://libraries.mit.edu/get/ieee

JSTOR: http://libraries.mit.edu/get/jstor

In addition to their own content, the AIP hosts the publications of a number of other organizations on the Scitation platform as well:
