VPN (Virtual Private Network):

An Alternative Off-Campus Access Option

VPN is software supported by MIT IS&T that makes your computer act as if it was an on-campus machine.

Using VPN when off-campus can:

  • get you access to library resources that are only available from on-campus
  • get you access when you are having problems with web certificates, settings in your browser, etc.
  • in many cases allow you to go directly to publisher's websites to get content rather than having to search Vera or the Barton catalog; since you will have an MIT IP address when using VPN, the publishers will recognize you as an authorized MIT user
