Acquisitions and Licensing Services (ALS)

The Acquisitions and Licensing Services department is responsible for the acquisition of all serials, journals, monographs, government documents, gifts, and digital resources for the MIT Libraries. Acquisitions and Licensing Services supports the Libraries' staff in their efforts to acquire and maintain information resources for education and research at MIT.

The department is comprised of five work units:

Digital Resources Acquisitions Section | Gifts Office | Government Documents Section | Monograph Acquisitions Section | Serials Acquisitions Section

  • Digital Resources Acquisitions Section
    The Digital Resources Acquisitions Section coordinates the acquisition of all web- and internet-based library material (other than government documents), and examines and negotiates contracts for all digital material, including CD-ROMs. The section is also responsible for resolving access problems, and for keeping records, including copies of license agreements, on the Libraries' digital products.

  • Gifts Office
    The Gifts Office is responsible for receiving and processing all materials donated to the MIT Libraries. Donated materials may enhance collections directly, by providing access to items that are otherwise more costly or unobtainable, or indirectly, by supplementing preservation funds through sale of gifts. Out-of-scope material not accepted into the collection is either donated to libraries or non-profit institutions, sold to dealers, or placed in an MIT Libraries book sale.

    The Gifts Office is located in Building 14E-210A. Staff members are available for consultation Monday through Friday, 9am-5pm.

  • Government Documents Section
    The MIT Libraries is a selective depository for United States Government publications printed by the Government Printing Office, receiving roughly 56% of all materials published. The processing of these publications is done in our Government Documents Section. Public services, including reference, for government documents are provided at each library.

  • Monograph Acquisitions Section
    The Monograph Acquisitions Section is responsible for acquiring monographic material through one-time orders, including monographs, journal back issues, and out-of-print titles, for the MIT Libraries. The section handles approval plans, slip plans, pre-order searching, firm ordering, claiming, receiving, canceling and invoice processing, as well as any related problems. The section is also responsible for maintenance of monograph acquisitions records.

  • Serials Acquisitions Section
    The Serials Acquisitions Section places all ongoing orders, including periodical/journal subscriptions, standing orders, continuation orders, blanket orders, and memberships, for all physical formats (print, microform, CD-ROM), as well as the invoice processing for these orders. The section is responsible for the checkin and claiming for all the titles we order, with the exception of journal issues, which are received and processed locally at each library.
