FRANCIS
AMASA WALKER, 1840-1897
Francis
Amasa Walker, 1840-1897, A.B. 1860, Amherst College, was the third president
of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 1881-1897. During the
Civil War he was a staff officer with the Army of the Potomac, emerging
a brevet brigadier general. He was superintendent of the Ninth Census,
1870-1872, and the Tenth Census, 1879-1881. In 1871-1872 he was also
Commissioner of Indian Affairs. From 1873 to 1881 he was professor of
political economy and history in the Sheffield Scientific School of
Yale University.
