Erja Kajosalo Chemistry Librarian kajosalo@mit.edu
Vera - Virtual Electronic Resource Access Access to all the MIT Libraries' electronic resources -- databases and ejournals.
Use databases to find articles and some property information.
Electronic books, such as handbooks and encyclopedias, can be used as a starting point for your research.
Medline/PubMed (1966-present)
Covers over 3,500 journals in biomedical research, neurosciences, and clinical medicine from 1966-present and provides related references.
SciFinder Scholar (1907-present)
SciFinder Scholar is the most comprehensive database of all chemical literature from 1907-present. It covers journals, patents, technical reports, conference proceedings, book series, and some monographs in all chemistry related fields, including chemical and biological engineering. You can also search Medline using the SciFinder Scholar interface, combining detailed chemical information with medical literature. You can install SciFinder Scholar onto your PC or Mac within MIT IP domains by following the Installation instructions or contacting the Chemistry Librarian (kajosalo@mit.edu) for assistance.
Web Of Knowledge/Web of Science (1973-present)
Web version of Arts & Humanities Citation Index, Social Sciences Citation Index and Science Citation Index; covers 5,300 major Science and Engineering journals, 1,700 Social Science journals and 1,100 Arts and Humanities journals. Major feature: Cited reference searching retrieves papers that have referenced earlier works by a specific author.
BIOSIS Previews (1990-present)
Covers journals, conferences and reports in major biological fields including biochemistry, bioengineering and biophysics, ecology and environment. Data for just 1999 or 1997-99 or 1985-89 may also be searched.
Compendex (1884-present)
Provides abstracts and full bibliographic citations for journal articles, conferences and reports in all engineering fields; covers worldwide engineering and technical literature as well as related fields in science and management. Online equivalent to Engineering Index.
The MIT Libraries now makes dozens of important handbooks in engineering and science available online to the MIT community through Knovel. Just to mention few popular titles:
Includes comprehensive information on all facets of industrial chemistry, detailing the science and technology in all areas of industrial chemistry. Contains nearly 1000 major articles in subject areas including: Inorganic and organic chemicals ; Advanced materials ; Pharmaceuticals ; Polymers and plastics ; Metals and alloys ; Biotechnology and biotechnological products ; Food chemistry ; Process engineering and unit operations ; Analytical methods ; and Environmental protection.
Mark Encyclopedia of Polymer Science and Technology
Presents the state of the art in all areas of polymer science, covering nanotechnology, new imaging and analytical techniques, new methods of controlled polymer architecture, biomimetics, and more.
StatRef Electronic Medical Library
Includes access to Basic & Clinical Pharamcology; Color Atlas & Synopsis of Clinical Dermatology; DSMIV-TR; Mosby's Drug Consult; Schwartz's Principles of Surgery; Review of Medical Physiology; Rudolphs Pediatrics; Merck Manual of Diagnosis and Therapy; USP: Advice for the Patient; Scientific American Medicine; Williams Obstetrics; and Stedman's Dictionary.
Faculty of 1000
Online research service that comprehensively and systematically highlights and evaluates the most interesting papers published in all the biological sciences, based on the recommendations of a Faculty of over 1600 selected leading researchers. The Faculty Members select, rate and comment on 1-2 of the most interesting papers they read each month, providing a consensus map of the latest scientific literature.
Protocols:
CSH Protocols [Cold Spring Harbor Protocols] (trial basis)
This database provides a wealth of laboratory techniques as well as an advanced online feature that allows scientists to interact with colleagues, contribute suggestions, and add comments to each protocol.
Advances in Biochemical Engineering/Biotechnology:
NCBI Bookshelf [National Center for Biotechnology Information Bookshelf]
The Bookshelf is a growing collection of biomedical books that can be searched directly by typing a concept into the textbox.
